Awakened early around 7:30 pm by Mal's car stopping. He came in and had Sandra with him.

I dressed and came down. Ralph went back to sleep he was so tired.

I made coffee - we talked. He went up and packed some some clothes. He has a room in Monticello. I can't blame him - it is tough to come all the way home so late. I hope he does not overdo it and wreck his health.

He and girlfriend left. I had some breakfast, ironed, washed my hair, put it up. Had lunch and finished my ironing.

We sat around. Ralph called the florist to send flowers. I am sorry Bertha died before we got a chance to visit her after our trip. We were good friends for many years. We made good time and got off the train at 1:00 pm. We had a good husky porter who was able to help Ralph with the bags to the taxi.

Then off to the bus station. The lunch counter was open so we went separately so we wouldn't have to lug the bags. My stomach is so upset - I will be glad to get home.

We are finally aboard the bus and the driver had to go a round-about route because there was a fire nearby but we arrived in Roscoe and changed to Shortline for Liberty. 10 minutes late.

Sue and the baby, Tommy, were waiting. The bus driver left the bags on the sidewalk and we stood talking to Sue when just as Mal and Richard came along. Ralph discovered we had a wrong bag. So we went into the office and they called but the bus had already left Monticello. So we had to come home without. We gave the other wrong bag to the office man.

We had tea and cake. Then Richard, Sue and baby left for home with Mal - he said he would be late and he was - dawn almost.

We got a good night's sleep in our own bed again.

Saturday, May 18, 1963

Weather lovely, though a bit colder. The heat was turned on it surely got hot. I did not even have to put a sweater on.

Awake early - went to diner for breakfast early - around 7:00 am. Ralph ate a big breakfast and I had cereal.

We stayed up in the dome awhile then back down to the seats until we get off now. There is a girl with a baby in the next seat. She is worrying about how to make her connection but unfortunately we are unable to explain it to her - she just can't seem to understand. Also, the porter tried to explain too. She will have to take her chances.

Here it is time to get off. We did not want to go in for lunch - we had a big breakfast and I am trying not to eat too much anyway. We got off and got our bags after going to LaSalle Street Station and checking on daylite time for Erie.

We wandered around and called Bertha and Evelyn but did not have time to see them. The train coming in was late and the Erie train leaves at 6. We were ablet to go on at 5:30 and got a good seat. These seats are not reserved . There is a diner on so we went in for dinner at 7:00 pm and had a nice dinner.

We got pillows and we each had a seat to ourselves to sleep. The man from the station was aboard for going to Corry, Pennsylvania. He left at 8:00 am the next morning.

Friday, May 17, 1963

A beautiful day coming up. Ralph went for the car with Greg and I went along. Came back and had tea. I went to Palo Alto shopping and bought Geoff a kick ball for his birthday which is next week. Bought Gretchen some paints and coloring books. We had a nice lunch out. And I was at last able to go out for once without a coat on.

Ralph gave Gretchen her lunch and took her to the bus. We were home by 3:30 pm then LaVergne and Gretchen went for Greg. Ralph and I cooked dinner. LaVergne brought in a cake so we let Geoff cut it for his birthday. Later we gave him his ball - he was thrilled and had all the kids over to kick with him. Later we looked at movies. Up early after a half-awake night. Always when I know I must get up this happens. So with Ralph we left with Greg. Got the train in Mountain View for San Francisco. Arrived there primarly to make our reservations to go home on the Western Pacific California Zephyr train. We did go to look into a trip to Yosemite but Ralph wants to get home. Says he has had enough. So we made our reservations for Thursday and will go in with Greg. This will be easier.

We shopped and walked around - ate a lunch in the Railway Station at a nice place. Then back on the 3 o'clock train. Greg came at 4:45 pm. So back to the house and LaVergne, who is a fine cook, had dinner ready.

We have had such a lovely visit and will miss all of these nice folks. We enjoy the children so much. We are and then sat around talking and watching TV and the beautiful views over the bay.

Went to bed - took pill.

Saturday, May 11, 1963

It is a bright day although it rained through the night. It is raining very hard and in between the sun comes out.

We came back and all had lunch. Ralph went in and lay down to rest - fell asleep. I sat reading. Paid the bill and then off to Disneyland.

We packed the car and rode the monorail into the park. (I am so upset I wish I were home though I am trying to enjoy myself). I think that crab meat made me sicker than usual and I can't stand eating out. I'm too sick.

Anyway, we went on a few rides with all and they were good. Greg and LaVerge and children went on all they could. We were seated to watch an old time show but I got so upset I had to go out and could not get in again to see the show. So upset it again for Ralph - this has been a mean trip.

Then we tried a place for lunch. Not much - finally it was time to leave and we got into the car. Drove along the road almost to Bakersfield before we ate. Not very good for me - too much again.

Then we went to Highland Milner Motel. Very lovely and all new. We had a separate room and that helped. Slept fairly good. Ralph was full of pep - he finally too a sleeping pill. I'm afraid to mix things up.

Tuesday, May 7, 1963

I have my days and notes mixed up because I did not write as I went along but have to remember things now that we're back at Los Altos Hills.

Anyway, we woke very early this morning. We were up and dressed. Did not want to go but also didn't want to upset things, so Greg had to go to Pamona to work for the day.

LaVergne and Gretchen want to go so Ralph and I stayed home and rested. Walked to bowling alley about 9:00 am for breakfast. Walked back and sat on patio - it is a lovely, sunny warm day though a bit windy. Geoff and I walked to look in the hobby shop - bought him a boat to make.

I made an appointment for a hair set nearby. Came back and took a shower. Then Ralph and Geoff stayed at poolside while I went to the hairdresser's.

When I came back at 2:30 pm, Geoff and Greg were in the pool. They came out and Geoff and Ralph and I walked up the road looking for a lunch room and found one. Greg went to Disney Hotel to get LaVergne and Gretchen who were on the bus from Los Angeles tour which we did not want to go on.

We came back and Greg and Gretchen were in the pool. Then Geoff went in again. We sat around and were getting sun burned until 8:00 pm when we all got dressed and we went to coffee place in Anaheim to eat. Very nice but all big dinners again so I took soup and crab flakes salad - a mistake - too much for me. Came back to motel - Ralph and I walked. Went to bed.

We called Loretta - she is going to Alice's on Friday for a week. Then went to bed. In bed about 1 hour when I had terrible cramps and terrible loose movement after being tightened up all week by pills. So scared and did not sleep at all that night. Ralph upset over it too much. I did mean to do this.

Monday, May 6, 1963

Up early. Ralph and I went out for a walk – to look the place over and give all a chance to use the bathroom.

Had breakfast at that bowling place – not too good. Even at 8:00 am it is full of bowlers.

Around 9:30 we left to see Los Angeles and saw the feet and hand marks of the stars at the Chinese Theatre then drove through Hollywood along Wilshire Boulevard. Saw Hollywood and Vine, the famous streets. Had lunch in a nice place.

Then after more walking, riding and looking we went through the Mexican section of Los Angeles. Also had been to the farmers’ market. I said nice for lunch it was not so good really at the farmer’s market. Left the Mexican section and we drove back toward Anaheim.

Tried Knotts Berry farm for dinner but all places closed for it was now 7:30 pm. We walked around while then left for restaurant further over in a shopping centre – very good – The Penny Place.

Back to motel and we took a walk – to bed early too.

[crossed out text] very frightened of what to do. Did not get to sleep until dawn. So tired and upset.

[Editor's Note: Toward's the end of this entry, there are two lines of text that are furiously crossed out. I say furiously because the tone of the diary over the next few entries changes radically. I have been trying to wrap my mind around what could have upset Grandma so much. Perhaps it was her stomach/intestinal problems during the trip. As you'll see, she then became obsessed thinking she had something more serious than perhaps stomach problems.]

Sunday, May 5, 1963

A beautiful day – a little on the cool side in the early morning but we all got started after we had gone down.

Ralph and I went out around 7:00 am to go walk on the beach. Then to bed – had a family room with a shared bath.

Took pill – slept badly – stomach so upset again.

Saturday, May 4, 1963

Up early and weather looks good – so had breakfast.

We are packed and left by 9:30 am – headed for Santa Barbara and got there around 3:30 pm stopping for lunch along the way. Walked along the beach after we checked in at the motel right next to the beach walk and ocean. A lovely spot.

Then we walked around down in the town thru the stores and finally settled for dinner at a lovely old Spanish place. We had a delicious dinner and many laughs.

Went back to the motel – we had a lovely room above Greg and LaVergne and the children. The town was beautiful and had many shops. Got the 7:48 so we were there by 9:00 am. Proceeded to walk to all the places – went to Santa Fe – they sent us to Western Pacific to change tickets – but we have to go back when we know what date we want to leave. Then to Greyhound about trip to Yosemite Park.

Weather good but chilly. Then to stores and bought toys for Geoff and Gretchen. Then to United Airlines about possible trip to Hawaii? Then to department stores – walked around – Ralph waited outside. Then to Woolworth’s where we had some lunch.

Then walked again to Southern Pacific to get train at 3:00 PM. We were glad to sit down and wait for we were early but we did enjoy the day – would like to spend a few more days walking around this town but I know I shall never again get the chance.

Greg met us and then home where LaVergne had dinner ready. Both are such nice hosts and do all they can to make our trip pleasant.

Shortly after dinner when things quieted down – we went to bed – in fact Ralph had already gone when I went. She was up feeding Tommy – she was going to call tonight – so asked her to have Mal call tonight.

We went back to bed awhile – it was 8:30 am when I woke again so went out. Gretchen was waiting for company for breakfast – a dear little girl.

We are together then Ralph came out and LaVergne seems better today. She suffers from headaches. We walked Gretchen to school.

Around 11:30 am Mal called – he was at Sue’s – just came out of the hospital – was thinking of taking a trip. Ralph suggested he keep quiet awhile – it might be better – guess he’s had enough of being quiet.

After lunch I came in and lay down to get a rest to help this cold and what ever else it is that’s eating me up. Ralph made lunch and has fallen asleep in chair. I have sewed my skirt – ironed some things – and sitting around now.

LaVergne is up working on dinner. Another lovely day – not a cloud in the sky – I was glad to see the daylight for I had been laying there since 3:00 am. Took an Anacin but could not sleep – we both got up at 6:30 am.

Ralph made the coffee – and agreed to go to the doctor. We rode with Greg, took car, stopped for a cup of coffee – then tried to find a Doctor. Tried three before we finally got one who would consent to see us. He gave Ralph some antibiotic pills and cough medicine to take.

Am back home now and had lunch – canned soup which Ralph likes or says he does. Will try to write some cards.

Finished cards. Later went with Ralph to pick Greg up. Mailed cards at Los Altos – picked up cough medicine – went shopping a little in supermarket. To cleaners – back home – Ralph found his way OK.

Had dinner. LaVergne has headache so she went to bed early. Ralph, Greg & I sat reading and talking.

Took a bath then came out for tea around 10:00. Ralph and I next, then Greg & Geoff came back home to clean Geoff up.

Later after 10:00 am Mass was out, Ralph and I walked to Loyola drug store and back to road to wait for the folks. Ralph seems to feel better after his taking that hot bath last night.

Every one up now and have eaten. The weather looks good – bright skies if a little windy.

We are getting ready to go – left here around 11:00 am. It is a very bright sunny warm day for a change – so we went the long way to San Francisco.

Saw all the bridges and Old Alcatraz which is now empty they say. Rode around San Francisco and saw a lovely city. Saw the Pacific Ocean and then to the Wharf at 5:00 pm.

To Alioto’s to eat – a big meal about as usual – nothing different. We could not get seats near the bay – so we had to be content to watch the boats come in from afar then later parked and Ralph stayed in the car while the rest of us went through Chinatown. Quite a sight.

I went into Old St. Mary’s Church there – Gretchen came in too. Then sleepily winded our way home – made good time too. Had tea and to bed – but not to sleep – too upset – after what I read today about cancer. Well it has to be faced I guess – but I’m not good at it.

Friday, April 26, 1963

Looks like a nice bright day coming up – so was dressed early.

LaVergne took Greg over so she could have the car. Ralph walked her up there then we came home and had lunch.

Very tired – sat talking – then when Gretchen came, LaVergne and Gretchen and I went out again – looked at some new houses being built – shopped. Got Greg, came back, had dinner.

Suzy called – says Mal is walking around – and that Loretta called too. She cleaned out refrigerator and took out plug – we have eaten and are watching TV.

Took a pill tonite too. LaVergne is laying down – does not feel too good. It is very cool.

Walked up the hill with Gretchen – Ralph came too. It is very very windy. Though the sun feels warm.

Have had lunch and sitting talking. Will now try to write some cards. Geoff is home – he goes up for Gretchen. Wrote cars so they can be posted by Greg.

Had trouble with bowels – so very loose – had to rush on the medicine early to see if it will help – waiting is the word. Did a very loose large movement early this a.m. – nervousness too after hearing from Sue about Mal.

Had dinner – could not eat much. Sue called again – Mal doing OK. She went to the house for the mail and to look things over. I get so upset I can’t eat. And Ralph is cold so not too much improved. In fact not at all but he won’t go to the Doctor. To bed but not much sleep – just fitfully. I wish I knew what ails me.

[Editor's note: I remember growing up that older relatives were always concerned with their BMs and our BMs of course. I remember my mother talking about being given castor oil as a kid. There seemed to be a great focus on making sure you had a bowel movement every day, and a good one at that. Maybe we just don't discuss it that way anymore or we know that health revolves around more than just making a good BM.]

Tuesday, April 23, 1963

A cloudy day with a few drops of rain on and off but fairly warm.

Up early – Greg & Geoff gone. We ate and sat talking then its time to walk up with Gretchen.

Back and had lunch. Ralph seems a little better – later after Geoff and Gretchen were home

Ralph had fallen asleep and I lay down for LaVergne and Greg are going to a debate and asked me to go along. I think I will.

We were eating and Suzy called to say that Mal had had to have an operation for appendicitis – that upset us all. I could not think – what a shock. She said he was doing good – later Greg and LaVergne left for their meeting and I stayed here.

We called the Doctor in Monticello – he said Mal was OK and would tell him we called. Later after 9:00 PM here we called Loretta. She was waiting for Mal’s call.

So was surprised to hear from us instead. She said that Uncle Will was not so good. She had just come home today.

We read awhile although my mind is so upset I cannot think and this sets off my stomach and bowel upsets again too. So every thing goes wrong – I was up when LaVergne came in at 11:00 PM. Then to bed – fell asleep after awhile. Beds are very good.

Monday, April 22, 1963

One whole week gone – it does go so quick. It is cloudy and rainy again but bright and a little warmer I think too.

Got up and decided it was too early so layed down again. Ralph’s cough is terrible – maybe he should go to the Doctor.

Finally got up around 7:30 am by the time I went out Greg and Geoff were both gone.

Have had breakfast now with LaVergne and Gretchen and Ralph and are sitting around talking. Expect to walk up the hill to the bus with Gretchen and LaVergne.

It was a lovely walk up to the top of the hill where the bus comes for her to go to kindergarten. She looks so cute and is a sweet little girl. We could see out across the bay at San Francisco – it was quite clear.

Then LaVergne and I walked back and looked at the flowers she is planting around the house. Came in and had lunch. Ralph ate fairly well – then he exits to the playroom and lays down awhile. Rest will help and he is taking the cough medicine but I wish he would agree to go see a Doctor.

After we had finished lunch it was then time for Geoff to come home. And shortly thereafter we walked back up the hill to get Gretchen. They played awhile then I tried playing games with Gretchen – it’s a change for her to have someone new to play games with. Geoff has grown up enough to get away from it though he did play some chess with us. Then Greg was in and dinner was ready. We ate after having a drink and all sat talking.

We did go to bed early – we are still so tired.

Sunday, April 21, 1963

Cloudy – raining, but not as cold so up early – Ralph slept all night so did I and feel rested.

Though Ralph’s cold seems worse – we all went out at once – dropped Greg and LaVergne and children off at their church and then we drove to St. Simon’s and were lucky to be right on time for 10:00 mass.

It is a large parish and was crowded. After church I bought some cookies and donuts from their bake sale then Ralph and I rode around till it was time to go for the family.

Showed Ralph their other house – back then to a lunch – we all ate eggs and bacon. I really slept – did not hear very many stops that we made. So washed and went into diner at 6:30 – they were open. Had eggs and grapefruit for a change. My stomach is still off – back now after spending awhile in the dome car after breakfast.

By slow degrees the train is making up a little time – dozing off and now we’re thinking of going in for some lunch. It will be so late when we get in. Did get lunch – soup, cheese, crackers, tea. Ralph had baked beans, coffee – then we went back to the seat. Not too far now to go – it has been raining mostly all night at different spots along the way. The train has made up some time – it is now 1 hour 35 minutes late.

Finally got in at 2:45 – it is pouring and cold. Greg & LaVergne and children came along right away – they had been calling about trains. I’m glad they did not have to sit there and wait – we were happy to see them and we rode back past the bay and saw a lot.

Went to house which is beautiful and it makes us so happy. The have worked so hard for this – we are having a lovely restful time. We had some drinks and talked. LaVergne got dinner – we are enjoying the children so much although Dad’s cold is giving him trouble – we sat around.

I went in and took bath and undressed – came out again for tea then we all went to bed. It was late – we do have to get up early for church.

Photo: galley kitchen of the Santa Fe Super Chief, c. 1940s.

Friday, April 19, 1963

I wrote some cards – one big one to Mal, one big one to Loretta, one small one to Grace, Ella, Frieda, LaVergne, Eli, Mamie – send the rest from San Francisco or elsewhere – it’s very cold and windy again.

We went into the Bright Angel – had to walk over. Had a light breakfast then bus came for tour around the Canyon. It was a very lovely ride. We saw it from all angles – got out at spots to view it – but it was so cold and windy – it was snowing a little too.

Then back to Bright Angel for lunch – I enjoyed my lunch – tried not to eat so much – Ralph ate almost nothing – his cold has home so upset – we left then and got aboard the bus again for the rest of the tour. This one was for 4 hours – and we went the other way – saw plenty but it was so cold snowy and windy that I did not get out for a few stops – neither did Ralph. We’ve about had it.

The driver was very pleasant and most interesting. We had checked out of the room – the time was up at 2:00 pm and we went in to find something light to eat – but that was a waste of time – finally talked the waitress into bringing toast and a cup of tea for me – cottage cheese, toast and coffee for Ralph – there is no snack bar here and the cost of the knick knacks is terrific. They would sell more if they charged less.

We finally finished after Ralph went to the desk and argued about the over charge for our drink – then we walked back to El Tovar hotel and sat in the lobby waiting for the bus to take us to Dillard Junction to get train. At 7:30 it came with the same character driving and when all got aboard and got going he started them all off to sing which made it most pleasant for there were quite a few good voices – it helped to shorten the trip.

We are now in the railroad station at the junction and by now it’s crowded – and our train will be as of now 2 hours late. There are people of the Indian race to be seen here. We hope the train really won’t be that late for us – we are both so tired and not feeling very good either. There is a snack bar here. So at 11:00 pm Ralph had a snack then I went over and had one while we waited. At 11:05 the East bound train came through and many left – then at 11:15 pm the Los Angeles train came – most left – the folks from Britain got on there – finally at 11:30 pm the Chief came through and we had a long walk up front to get aboard.

With every one asleep and all lights out. Our seat was being used so we had a flash light and in finding the seat woke up the occupant whose seat was in back but had her mother using it. The people in seat front came on with us and they had three children so things really turned up but they were very good and all quieted down soon. We both took Anacin and I slept very good – Ralph’s cold is giving him some trouble – weather very cold here.

Thursday, April 18, 1963

Slept as well as can be expected – and that’s on and off – Ralph did not do too good – so before dawn went into the dome car to watch the sunrise and it was a gorgeous sight. All purple and pink halo’s around and behind it as it rose – am now dressed and so is Ralph and we are waiting for the diner to open. Went into diner early but missed our regular waiter – sat at far end and it was cold and drafty but we had a good breakfast – hot cereal.

Then went out and tried to fall asleep again – Ralph was not good – the cold he has caught is bothering him a lot – he is taking aspirin – finally time passed and we went in early for lunch so we could be ready to get off at Williams Junction for the train to Grand Canyon.

Our regular waiter was there – we had soup and chili – which chili was a joke. Two boys sat opposite us – they are moving from Niagara Falls to Los Angeles – I hope they like it – they both ate the chili but it wasn’t a good deal for me – finally it was time to get off – the train was a bit late – almost one hour.

We were held up because the tracks were being repaired at Flagstaff – guess the railroad is trying to watch out after Monday’s wreck.

Well the driver and his helper on the bus were real cowboy characters – finally we got going – 1 ½ hours ride about 65 miles to the Canyon but very good roads – mostly scrub – no towns or homes but one village along the way.

Came to El Tovar Hotel in the Canyon where we had a room reserved. Very nice – we got there about 5:00 pm. Walked around looking at the sights and what a beautiful piece of wonder work the canyon is. We were so cold though there is snow here too – as it was at Flagstaff. The bellboy said it snowed all day yesterday – most of the help are Indians.

We went in and had a drink – walked around outside, looking at the canyon – came back and had another drink then went in for dinner. Ralph’s dinner was not so good – mine was fairly good – this is a big place and very busy so you have to be thankful to get a good meal. We sat around the lobby for awhile after dinner – then went to our room where we took a bath and got ready for bed.

Ralph called Mal about 7:00 pm and it was good to hear his voice again – he said he was doing OK. Ralph fell asleep and I waited till after nine to call LaVergne because it costs less – first to tell her what time the train came I – then to bed and I went right to sleep although my stomach is giving me trouble again.

A good bed again – but we both woke up at 2:30 am though we went back to sleep fast enough – we only slept in snatches anyway. Ralph had the clock set for 8 but we were awake by 6:30 so we got up.

Wednesday, April 17, 1963

Awake around 2:00 am – but we both went to sleep again and woke around 6:00 am. It rained – a thunderstorm – so got up and got dressed. The phone rang – a call we left to wake up – so we dressed and walked over to Dearborn station. Ate breakfast there – very good – then sat around waiting for our Santa Fe at 9:00 am. Got aboard – it is not too crowded – a pleasant bunch – and we’re off. Went into dinner at 12:30 and it was too late to get a drink – we had just come into Iowa and it’s a Dry State – so had a good lunch. So between the dome card and listening to our radio the time passed quickly. We had a very [CANNOT READ WRITING] thoughts but after taking a drink again from our pint we went to diner late. We’re in Kansas and all you can get to drink is beer – and not even that between 5 and 11 so we had our own drink. Sat in the dome car awhile and was room in our seat to go to sleep – we hope.

[Editor's Note: I just laugh at this entry because it was so "Grandma" especially when it came to liquor. Washed after a fairly restful night – we each had a whole seat to ourselves – so could relax – had a good breakfast – train made good time and went back to lunch at 12 and had a good lunch – were able to get a drink too. Finally arrived in Chicago at 5:45 pm. Checked bags through to Richmond, California except one – and took taxi to Congress Hotel. Have just come back now after finding a spot to eat and walking around. Called Bertha & Evelyn (LaVergne’s cousins). Hal is not too well again. We were just too tired to try to go out to see them – maybe next time. I’ve had a bath and Ralph is now in the tub – a bath helps a lot. So far it’s been OK – so to bed.

Photo: The Congress Hotel, Chicago, Illinois

Monday, April 15, 1963

Up early – Ralph had breakfast ready – after Mal left we started right in on the packing – finished – all but dressing did last few details by 12 – so sat down to think then had dinner around 2pm. Mal called to say he could not get away – so we had to driver over – left the house at 4pm. Stopped at Lucy’s to tell her she could use the sewing machine if she wanted to – had called Jean and also spoke to Joan – she is there too – bought tickets at 5:20. Mal came to get keys – he stayed till we left on 5:30 bus to Binghamton but we had to get off at Roscoe to change to the Chenango bus line thru to Hancock where we had to change again. Finally got to Binghamton by 9pm. Wandered around after checking bags – found a restaurant and it was mostly bar but ate something even though it was all cold – and it was cold outside too – so we hustled back to the bus station and sat there till 12:45. We got on the train which was jammed with kids going back to school and on tour – but it was a pleasant ride.

A Cross Country Train Trip

My great-grandmother, Therese McGinnes Austin, and my great-grandfather, John Ralph Austin, took a cross-country train trip from New York to San Francisco in Spring 1963.
